Pollution: fix responsibility on TNPCB

February 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - ERODE:

Apprehending catastrophic consequences in store due to pollution at Perundurai SIPCOT Industrial Estate similar to the incident at the Common Effluent Treatment Plant at Ranipet, the Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi has demanded that responsibility be fixed on Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board in the event of such major accidents.

Rather than evolving long-term solution for pollution through consultations with the Industries Department, the TNPCB appeared keen on espousing the cause of polluting industries, E.R. Eashwaran, KMDK General Secretary, said, urging the Board to desist from supporting the entry of soft drinks multinational company in SIPCOT Industrial Estate.

The incident at Ranipet that claimed 10 lives ought to be an eye-opener, Mr. Eashwaran said, drawing the attention of the policymakers to the sufferings of residents in villages surrounding the Perundurai SIPCOT Industrial Estate due to serious ailments such as cancer due to contamination of air and water due to discharge of effluent into the ground. Despite the confirmation of groundwater brackishness in areas surrounding Perundurai Industrial Estate, the TNPCB's inaction was agonising, Mr. Eashwaran said.
