S. Tamileelam, 20, a third year B. Com student from Nallampalayam in Coimbatore, and her sister S. Ovia, 14, a class IX student, on Saturday approached the Coimbatore district Collector seeking a licence to possess a pistol for personal protection in the wake of Pollachi sexual abuse case.
Accompanied by their father Pa. Santhakumar, the siblings said they were shocked by the reports related to the Pollachi sexual abuse and were afraid of interacting with even known persons and male friends after the incident. “Shocked by the Pollachi case, we doubt whether the government can ensure the safety of women. The accused are said to have ruined the lives of 270 women in seven years... A weapon like a pistol can ensure our safety in the event of an abduction or a group attack as a lone girl may not be able to physically overcome a group of men,” said Ms. Tamileelam She said that the women and girls who were sexually abused by the Pollachi-based network may not come forward to lodge complaints to the police as the Coimbatore Superintendent of Police revealed the name of the complainant in the case.

The siblings wanted the case to be investigated properly so that the accused received due punishment. They wanted all the persons who were part of the network to be arrested. The Coimbatore City and Rural police registered cases against more than 2,090 people who staged protests on Friday.
The Pollachi east police booked 12 leaders of various parties and 988 others who staged a protest near Gandhi statue at Pollachi.
