PMK moves HC for restoration of security

August 02, 2013 03:26 am | Updated November 16, 2021 09:51 pm IST - CHENNAI:

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has moved the Madras High Court for a direction to the State government to restore police protection to party founder S. Ramadoss and his son and former Union Minister Anbumani Ramadoss.

In the petition, party president G.K. Mani said Dr. Ramadoss was residing at Thailapuram in Villupuram district and Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, who was also the president of the youth wing, was at T. Nagar here.

Considering the threats the two were facing, police protection was provided to them round-the-clock for the past 15 years. On April 26 this year, security for Dr. Ramadoss was withdrawn. This was due to “extraneous political considerations.”

Already in January and February this year, he submitted representations to the State Home Secretary and the DGP on the need to restore protection to the former Union Minister.

The matter of protection for the two leaders assumed significance in the light of recent happenings in the State and attacks on leaders of political parties.

When there was a necessity to increase the security for the two, withdrawal of the existing arrangement was shocking. The government had not withdrawn the security for other political leaders, the petitioner said.

When the matter came up before Justice K.K. Sasidharan, it was adjourned to August 5.
