District Congress president G. Kumar has written a letter to the project director of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) demanding to expedite construction of the road in the Tindivanam-Krishnagiri phase of National Highways 66 (NH 66) connecting Puducherry-Krishnagiri.

According to the text of the letter Mr.Kumar made available to the press, he said that the project of laying a upgraded road began in 2011. It was stipulated to be completed in three years at a cost of Rs.561 crore.

However, even after five years the work is yet to be completed.

Culverts and mini bridges have not been completed in several places.

Diversions

As a result vehicles are forced to take diversions. Motorists find it difficult to traverse the road that connects Tiruvannamalai district with Chennai as well as Bangalore. Also a lot of time is wasted to manoeuvre the vehicles on this stretch. One has to incur additional fuel cost and maintenance expenses on vehicles.

The road passes through Tiruvannamalai, an important pilgrimage centre and Gingee fort, a heritage site and archeological monument. Completion of NH66 will augur economic development in three districts — Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Krishnagiri.

Hence, there is a dire need to expedite the work and save people from immense hardship, he said.
