Pipeline to be ready by December

The fourth drinking water pipeline project for Tuticorin Corporation would become in December, said Mayor A.P.R. Anthony Grace on Friday.

Replying to a query raised by S. Anbarasan, 48th ward councillor of DMK, on the progress of the project at the corporation council meeting here, she said that about 90 per cent of the work had been completed. She thanked Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for her efforts in hosting the Global Investors Meet, which attracted investments to the tune of Rs.68,000 crore in Tuticorin district. The Mayor appealed to the councillors to bring out any issue pertaining to rains, which caused mosquito-borne diseases in their respective wards, for a solution.

S. Augustin, 20th ward councillor of AIADMK, alleged that there was delay in issuing birth and death certificates and in some cases the certificates had irrelevant names. Moreover, the councillor said that the Threspuram main road was battered and unfit for vehicular traffic. The Mayor sought explanation from the officials of Health Department to initiate necessary action against the person responsible for wrongful entries in birth and death certificates.

I. Periysami, AIADMK councillor, said that there was illegal tapping of water from the drinking water pipeline from Vallanadu and somebody was involved in deliberately causing delay in supply of water to residents under the corporation limits. Further, he said frequent power cuts had been interrupting water supply from Vallanadu. Responding to it, the Mayor said that water leakage was checked at Kongarayakurichi and the problem was solved. Selvaraj, 32nd ward councillor of DMK, said that several building constructions were getting delayed due to the delay in plan approval. A. Kottur Raja, 30th ward councillor of DMK, complained that the underground drainage work was progressing at a snail’s pace and demanded its early completion. The Mayor said that most of the works had been completed and sewage treatment plant work was on at Tharuvaikulam. M. Balasubramanian, 46th ward councillor of DMK, said that newly-laid roads had been dug up for underground drainage work. C. Selvaraj, 54th ward councillor of AIADMK, complained of stray dog menace and sought a remedy. Deputy Mayor, P. Xavier, Commissioner R. Poongodi Arumaikan and other officials attended.
