Pioneering stand-up comedy show is back

Kalakkapovadhu Yaaru which made Sivakarthikeyan a household name is all set to return after 2 years

The popular Koffee with DD may have gone off air from Star Vijay, but the channel will be rebooting their popular stand-up show Kalakkapovadhu Yaaru on July 19 after an interval of two years. In its earlier avatar, the show had spawned notable talents such as Sivakarthikeyan.

The new show will feature at least 50 comedians, scouted through auditions across the State and will have popular anchors of the channel as the show’s judges.  

“It was the first reality show in Tamil Nadu, which was about comedy, but we stopped it after a number of other channels also started mimicking it,” says R. Balachandran, Senior Vice-President, Marketing, Star Vijay.  

He also dismissed rumours that

Koffee with DD was going off air because of a recent tiff with the Producers Council over the issue of buying the television rights of smaller movies. While there are several rumours including the one that the Producers Council has unofficially asked Kollywood celebrities to not cooperate with the show or the channel, sources in the channel say that the show is on a break.  

“The issue with the Producers Council has nothing to do with Koffee with DD . The show has been going on for a long time and we simply wanted to take a break. We will be coming back stronger soon,” says Mr. Balachandran. 

Puthiya Thalaimurai's ‘ Nammal Mudiyum (Yes We Can) seems to have struck a chord among residents of rural areas across the State by bringing them together on the streets for social causes.

Chief Editor, New Generation Media Corporation, S. Ramasubramanian says that the programme originated as a means to highlight the commitment of residents of remote villages of the State to save their environment.

“The feedback from residents in areas where we conducted such programmes indicates that we have ignited the spark of social responsibility among the youth,” he says. Over this summer, the Nammal Mudiyum team has coordinated with residents in cleaning up waterbodies like tanks and ponds using local resources. Last weekend, they tied up with Sabari Green Foundation, an NGO, to take up cleaning of Adambakkam Lake on the city’s southern suburbs. The team had five more programmes last Sunday, including the cleaning up of a tank in Aangadu village in Tiruvallur district.

“Instead of being behind the screen all the time, we wanted to connect directly with our viewers, especially youth from across the State,” says a coordinator.
