A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking to quash a Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) advertisement in May this year calling for applications for Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). The test is scheduled to commence from August 17.
In the petition, S. Karuppiah, founder of the Central and State Government Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Employees Federation, said in the advertisement, there was no reference to the minimum qualifying marks for the reserved categories. In Andhra Pradesh the minimum qualifying marks for SC/ST was 40 per cent. In Odisha and Manipur, it was 50 per cent and in Uttar Pradesh 55 per cent. But in Tamil Nadu, there was no concession for the reserved categories. A candidate should obtain 60 per cent to obtain a pass. There was no reference about the minimum qualifying marks for persons coming under the reserved categories. The government should provide for relaxation of marks for these candidates, the petitioner said.
When the matter came up before the First Bench, notice was taken on behalf of the government and the TRB. As time was sought for filing counter, the court posted the matter for further hearing on September 17.
