Patient support group launched

Early diagnosis and treatment is crucial for breast cancer, and equally important was care and support. In a move towards establishing a platform to enable interaction among patients, Christian Medical College (CMC) launched a patient support group recently.

A total of 50 patients – those who had completed treatment and are on follow-up and those undergoing treatment – were invited for the first meeting of the group.

“We registered all the invited patients. Using their contacts, we have created groups on Whatsapp, Facebook and email too so that they can interact among themselves whenever required,” M.J. Paul, head of Endocrine Surgery, CMC said. The group will go on to include more patients.

In the course of treatment, the women experience temporary hair loss, mild skin reaction, menstrual irregularities and infertility. Their blood count reduces, increasing the risk of infection. Hence, they require supportive care to cope with side effects during this period, Selvamani, head of Radiotherapy said.

During the meeting, a stall with wig samples was set up. Stall providing information on recommended diet and breast prosthetics were also set up. Cancer survivors shared their experiences with new patients during the meeting.

Doctors said they were planning to hold patient support group meetings every month, and an annual meeting in October.

The meeting was organised by CMC Vellore Breast Group formed by the departments of Radiation Oncology, Endocrine Surgery, Medical Oncology, Palliative Care, Lifestyle Medicine, Dietary services and prosthetic centre.
