Banwarilal Purohit visits micro compost centre, administers pledge to students

Governor Banwarilal Purohit visited the micro compost centre of Vellore Corporation at the New Bus Stand on Monday.

On his visit to the Fort City on Monday, Governor Banwarilal Purohit took a look at two of Vellore Corporation’s micro compost centres at Gandhi Nagar and New Bus Stand.

Accompanied by Collector S.A. Raman, the Governor visited the micro compost centres where the Corporation’s sanitary workers segregated waste and took up composting of biodegradable waste. The workers separated non-biodegradable waste such as plastic and aluminium, and it was collected by vendors for recycling on a periodic basis.

A Corporation official said the Governor appreciated the solid waste management system put in place by the local body.

“He said that this was a good model, and putting in place such a system in a Corporation was a huge effort. Usually, such works are taken up in a smaller area, such as town panchayat or villages, while Corporations and municipalities dump waste in a yard. He appreciated that we were able to do this at the ward-level. The Governor said that other local bodies should learn from this model and put an end to dumping of waste,” he said.

At the micro compost centre at the New Bus Stand, Mr. Purohit took a look at the newly introduced mechanised segregation of waste. “From manual segregation, we have put in place a conveyor belt at the centre. Based on how it works, this will be replicated in other centres,” he said.

At the New Bus Stand, the Governor, as part of Swachh Bharat initiative, administered a pledge to students and sanitary workers. He flagged off a rally on the occasion. His next stop was at the Government Pentland Hospital where a street play on the importance of putting an end to open defecation and encouraging construction of individual household toilets was staged.

Mr. Purohit later received petitions from people from various walks of life, including farmers, political party members and the public at the Circuit House.

Later, the Governor visited the Archaeological Survey of India’s museum and Government Museum in the Vellore Fort. At the Government Museum, he visited all seven galleries. Museum officials demonstrated ‘Magic Jar,’ a glazed pottery made in Karigiri style.

In the VIP register, he wrote that witnessing the monuments of the 7th and 9th century period provided him a glimpse into the glory of the civilisation and culture.

He offered prayers at Sri Jalakanteswarar Temple inside the Fort.
