Over 3,500 fishermen to get compensation in ban period

Beneficiary fishermen should be active in the profession

Over 3,500 fishermen would benefit from the compensation given by the government during the fishing ban period along the East Coast in Kanyakumari district.

An official from the Fisheries Department said a stretch of 11.5 km of the 71.5-km-long coastal area in the district was on the East Coast. Four villages – Arokyapuram, Chinnamuttom, Kanyakumari and Kovalam – were situated on the East Coast.

During the last fishing ban period, 3,460 fishermen received a compensation of Rs. 2,000 each. Those fishermen who were members of any of the five fishermen cooperative societies in these villages alone were eligible to get the compensation.

Besides this, the beneficiary fishermen should be active in the profession, should have valid membership cards issued by any of these societies and ration cards.

Application forms for getting compensation would be issued through the fishermen cooperative societies from Monday (April 20), the official said.

Stringent action would be taken against those who violated the fishing ban, the official warned.

Similarly, the fishing ban period for the 38 West Coast villages would be from June 15 to July 29. As many as 24,877 fishermen living in villages along the West Coast received compensation during the last ban period, the official added.
