ONGC identifies over 20 places for oil exploration

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has identified more than 20 places in the district for drilling oil wells and convened a public hearing here on Thursday.

After carrying out a geophysical survey in Ramanathapuram, Sivanganga and Pudukottai districts for oil and gas exploration in December last, the ONGC has identified the villages for drilling oil exploration wells in the district, official sources here said.

As it was in the process of obtaining environmental clearance for drilling the wells, ONGC has convened the public hearing at the Collectorate here on Thursday morning.

People from the identified villages have been invited to express their views in the meeting.

The public hearing would be presided over by Collector K Nanthakumar and be attended by ONGC officials, the sources said. The officials would offer clarifications if the public raised any objection and allay their apprehensions over the project, the sources said.

In the geophysical survey, the starting point for oil and gas exploration, ONGC had drilled holes up to a maximum of 60 feet. After placing explosives in the holes, it had measured the resultant vibrations and analysed the data to find out the availability of gas and oil below the earth’s surface.

Now, the ONGC proposed to drill oil wells in Tirupullani, Periyapattinam, Regunathapuram, Panaikulam, Pallamorkkulam, Pullandai, Velanur, Vellamarichukkati, Uttrakosamangai, Achadipirambu, Sakkarakottai, Pattinamkathan, Palangulam, Chittrakottai, Pullangudi, Peruvayal, Attiyuttu, Kilanagachi, Enmanakondan, Pirappanvalasai and Sattakonvalasai, official sources said.
