One new private medical college approved

One new private medical college has been approved in Tamil Nadu while three seats from the State quota in nine private medical colleges were filled on the second day of general counselling.

Madha Medical College, beyond Porur in Chennai, has been granted affiliation to admit 150 students for the year 2011-12. A minority institution, it has to provide 75 seats to the State pool.

A total of 736 seats also came up under the single window counselling on Saturday. Three seats were taken, all at PSG Medical College, Coimbatore, leaving 733 in the pool to be filled.

Ninety-seven seats each were taken from Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Annapoorna Medical College to be used in the State pool as their applications seeking minority status are being processed.

Minority institutions submit 50 per cent of their seats to the State pool and non-minority institutions, 65 per cent. The seats from private colleges were included only on the second day of counselling.

Seats at the Government Dental College were also taken by students on Saturday.
