On D. Pandian’s 80th birthday, Nallakannu calls for political unity

Senior Communist leader R. Nallakannu on Tuesday made an appeal to political parties in Tamil Nadu to come together and fight for the rights of the State.

Addressing a meeting organised in connection with the 80 birthday of CPI’s State secretary D. Pandian, Mr. Nallakannu said in other States political parties would not allow their differences to come in the way of issues concerning their State.

“We also need a similar approach to win the rights of Tamil Nadu and the CPI will play its role in achieving the objective,” he said.

Mr. Pandian was greeted by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and leaders of other political parties. Senior AIADMK leader E. Madhusudhanan and finance minister O. Panneerselvam met Mr. Pandian at his residence and wished him on behalf of the Chief Minister.

Born David Pandian, the communist leader was a lecturer in English in Alagppa College in Karaikudi, before becoming a full-time member of the Communist Party.

He was the first general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Kalai Ilakkiya Perumandram launched by late P. Jeevanandam.

He left the CPI to join the United Communist Party of India (UCPI) led by Mohit Sen and he was elected to Lok Sabha from North Chennai. He returned to CPI and became its State secretary.
