Officials to take action against those using service road as dump yard

Traders store sand, gravel and other construction materials on the road

Collector K. Maharabushanam has asked National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials to initiate action against those responsible for storing construction materials for sales on the service road in Kuranguchavadi in the city.

The road in the junction is used by traders for storing sand, gravel and other construction materials. A portion of the road is used by them for many years now, leaving little space for road users.

The road has turned into a commercial place for the traders as vehicles are also parked round-the-clock.

Despite the issue being brought to the notice of the officials concerned and the district administration, no action has been taken so far.

During the road safety meeting held on Thursday, participants raised the issue that service road was encroached upon and used for commercial purpose.

The Collector hence asked NHAI officials and revenue officials to seize the materials and auction them. Also, the Collector asked officials to initiate legal action against the traders for encroaching upon the service road.

The issue of parking more buses in New Bus Stand resulting in congestion was also discussed.

Corporation Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj said that a proposal for creating additional entry and exit points has been forwarded to the Directorate of Town and Country Planning for approval.

It was decided at the meeting to remove encroachments in the city, install closed circuit television cameras on highways and ban entry of autorickshaws in Old Bus Stand.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) S. Prabakaran said that a total of 17 persons lost their lives on city roads in February while 129 were injured in road accidents. A fine of Rs. 7,00,850 was collected for traffic violations in the city, he added.

Superintendent of Police G. Subbulakshmi said that fatalities have gone down in rural areas in February when compared to January.
