The Registration Department has issued a circular instructing the sub-registrars across the State not to register lands classified as waterbodies.
According to the circular dated February 1, the instructions are issued based on the order of the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court. The sub-registrars have been asked to collect details from revenue and local body departments on the areas classified as waterbodies. They should ensure that the guideline value for these lands is zero. In case a land classified as a waterbody has a survey number or street value in the records of the Registration Department, the details and documents should be obtained from the Revenue and Municipal Administration Departments and sent to the head of the Registration Department.
If the land has been registered already, the sub-registrars should see if patta has been issued. The circular also said that disciplinary action will be taken if the lands classified as waterbodies are registered.

A senior official of the department here said the details would be collected by the sub-registrars within a fortnight.
“We are not registering lands classified as waterbodies now. If there are lands that are classified as waterbodies but have been registered already, we will stop re-registering those too now,” the official said. In case such a land has been registered already and has patta too, those who want to re-register it should get a no-objection certificate from a competent authority. Otherwise, the land will not be re-registered, the official said.
K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the sub-registrars should take details from the Public Works Department too. The information collected should be shared on the Registration Department website.
