69 prisoners appeared for the examination in Tiruchi and other Central Prisons situated across the State.

Examination fever has gripped Central Prison here with prisoners taking the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination inside the sprawling jail campus here on Wednesday.

The jail school near the tower block was the venue for the inmates taking the SSLC exam that commenced throughout the State.

All the 69 prisoners who appeared for the examination were convicts lodged in Tiruchi and other Central Prisons situated across the State.

Arrangements

A team of officials from the Education Department armed with question papers arrived ahead of the scheduled time of commencement of the examination to oversee the arrangements made in the jail and conducted the exam.

The convicts in different age groups took the Tamil language paper exam on day one.

Deputy Inspector-General of Prisons (Tiruchi Range) R. Duraisamy, Prison and Education Department officials monitored the exam.

Prison officials told The Hindu that some convicts from Central Prison at Palayamkottai, Madurai, Salem, Coimbatore, and Cuddalore besides inmates from the Borstal School in Pudukottai were brought to the Tiruchi Central Prison with escort from the respective jails on the eve of the test.

They would return to their respective jail once the examination concludes, the official added.
