The Neyveli Lignite Corporation has initiated the process of building 2,500 toilets in government schools in Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. The project has been taken up under the Swachh Vidyalay Abhiyan programme of the Centre that forms part of the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan programme, according to S. Boopathy, NLC Director (Planning and Projects).
In a statement released here Mr Boopathy stated that the Union Ministry of Human Resources had directed the public sector undertakings to take up responsibility of constructing toilets in all government schools across the country.
Accordingly, the NLC has undertaken to put up toilets in Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan where it has power plants. The NLC has set aside substantial amount from its budgetary allocation for the Corporate Social Responsibility programme.

In the first phase it would build 1,118 toilets in 559 government schools in Tamil Nadu. The State has been divided into 11 zones and each zone would be assigned to a contractor for toilet construction.
Mr Boopathy stated that “the NLC feels proud to associate itself with the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan and the Swachh Vidayalay Abhiyan programmes of the Centre.”
It is also learnt that a number of contractors are keen on joining the programmes.
