Lack roads, stormwater drain and sewage network

Access denied: The burial ground in Mettukuppam, Maduravoyal, has been closed for public use.

Chennai Corporation’s ward 147 includes localities such as Alapakkam, Mettukuppam and a portion of Maduravoyal carved out from the Maduravoyal Panchayat. The ward with a village outlook and having a huge residential population remained backward infrastructure wise.

The residents of the locality have the same old complaints —lack of civic infrastructure, including roads, stormwater drain and sewage network.

The division coming under the Valasaravakkam Zone was one of the badly affected areas in the December 2015 deluge .

Incomplete drains

S. Thomas, a resident of Krishna Nagar Main Road, said several residential areas were flooded in the heavy rains in 2015 and so the Chennai Corporation had planned to construct a stormwater drain network. But the work remains incomplete in several places in the division.

He said the incomplete work of storm water drain in Krishna Nagar Main Road, had resulted in poor road condition .

Similarly, the residents also want the Chennai Corporation to reclaim the encroached road in Dasari Padma Nagar.

The residents claimed that the road which had been under use for more than 25 years had now been ve closed by a influential person claiming that it was a a private road. This has forced the motorists to take a detour.

Madhavan, a resident of Mettukuppam, said that the residents of the division despite having a burial ground in their area are unable to use it and are forced to usethe burial ground in Porur.

He complained that the local officials of Corporation refuse to issue death certificates if the dead are taken to the burial ground, as the civic body claims the burial ground had not been handed over.

The residents of Perumal Koil Street in Alapakkam say despite having a stormwater drain facility, houses in their locality get flooded.
