December 15, 2013 02:28 am | Updated 02:28 am IST - DHARMAPURI:

The NCSC has also requested officials to ensure protection to people from Scheduled Caste

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Dharmapuri District Collector and the Superintendent of Police to furnish the action-taken report against those responsible for the December 4 attack on the family of Dalit girl who married a Vanniyar in Veppamarathur near Bommidi Pappireddipatti taluk.

In a letter faxed to the officials, D. Venkatesan, Director, State Office of the NCSC, also requested the officials to ensure protection to people from Scheduled Caste in the village. The commission enclosed the copies of the newspaper reports along with the copy of the representation submitted by G. Suresh, husband of the Dalit woman S. Sudha.

Mr. Venkatesan also pointed out that in spite of two earlier letters from the commission to take immediate and suitable action, the Dalit woman’s family was attacked. The woman approached the commission last month and sought gun licence for self- protection saying that the family was facing continuous boycott and discrimination and harassment from caste Hindus.
