Navaneethakrishnan is Advocate General

A. Navaneethakrishnan, defence lawyer for Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the ongoing cases against her, has been appointed the Advocate General of Tamil Nadu.

V. Sethuraman, S. Gomathinayagam and K. Chellapandian have been appointed Additional Advocates-General.

Hailing from Orathanad in Thanjavur district, Mr. Navaneethakrishnan enrolled as advocate in 1981.

He was Special Public Prosecutor for narcotic cases and cases under the Essential Commodities Act in Thanjavur from 1991 to 1996.

He was Additional Public Prosecutor in the Madras High Court from 2001 to 2004.

Mr. Navaneethakrishnan has been representing Ms. Jayalalithaa in the ‘disproportionate assets' case against her in a court in Bangalore as well as a case being pursued against her by the Central Bureau of Investigation in Chennai for allegedly receiving cash gifts from her party workers on her birthday several years ago.

He is also defending her in a case filed by the Income Tax Department for non-filing of wealth tax returns.
