Murugan is on a fast-unto-death in jail

Nalini Sriharan, a life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has decided to go on a fast from Monday demanding that the government take steps to save the life of her husband, V. Sriharan alias Murugan, who is on a fast-unto-death at the Vellore Central Prison for Men.

“Nalini will submit the petition for observing the fast to the Superintendent of Prison, Special Prison for Women on Sunday,” her advocate P. Pugalenthi said.

He said Nalini wanted the Prisons Department to withdraw the punishment awarded to Murugan for launching the fast unto death. “He cannot meet Nalini for three months. She wants this punishment to be withdrawn,” he said.

The advocate said Murugan had fallen ill with fever on Friday night and was treated by doctors.

Nearly three weeks ago, Nalini had filed a petition seeking parole for six months.

M. Radhakrishnan, another of her advocate, said, “The government pleader has taken notice of the petition for filing a counter petition.”

Meanwhile, C. Sylendra Babu, ADGP, met Murugan and appealed to him to give up the fast.
