In recognition of yoga’s role as an adjuvant therapy, the Department of Physiology of Sri Venkateshwaraa Medical College Hospital and Research Centre in Puducherry recently conducted a Continuing Medical Education programme on the therapeutic potentials of yoga.
A yoga lab and therapeutic centre was also inaugurated.
The programme covered techniques for healthy well-being, asanas and pranayama techniques in the therapeutic application in musculoskeletal conditions, yoga’s influence on gene expression, importance of yoga in treatment of genetic, psychiatric, psychosomatic and physical diseases like metabolic syndrome and limitations of yoga in situations like emergency conditions.

A practical demonstration of asanas was also held. The sessions were conducted by medical practitioners and experts from various institutions including Jipmer, Centre for Yoga Therapy, Education and Research at the Mahatma Gandhi College and Research Institute Puducherry, Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Chennai and Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, Bengaluru.
The programme was attended by B. Ramachandran, Chairman and Managing trustee of Ramachandra Educational Trust, Dr. Madhusudan Chaudhury, Principal Dr. Sukumaran Annamalai, Medical Superintendent, Dr. S. Ratnasamy, Vice Principal (Academic), Dr. P. Kanagavalli, Vice Principal (Administration), Dr. N. Nirmala, Head, Department of Physiology, and Dr. V. Shanmugam, Head, Department of Orthopaedics.
Towards a safer workplace
With an aim to prepare students on aspects of safety and first aid treatment in the case of a critical condition at their future workplace, the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology conducted a one-day workshop recently on ‘Industrial Safety and First Aid Practices’.
The workshop was held in association with the Indian Society For Technical Education students chapter.
K. Babu Nizam, Head, Operations, Rane Brake Lining Limited, Puducherry, delivered a lecture on industrial safety.
He covered topics such as occupational health and work related issues.
Dr. Sivasubramania Bharathi from Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College, delivered a lecture on first aid practices covering scene assessment, CPR, chest pain, dislocations, use of Automated External Defibrillators, broken bones, burns, soft tissue injury, stroke, seizures and bleeding.
T. Aloysius Sahayaraj, General Manager- HR, Poclain Hydraulics covered general safety aspects in his talk, while
B. Kadhirvel, Senior Executive, MRF, spoke on workplace criteria such as OHSAS 18001: 2007 and ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems.
