A man running a women’s hostel in Thillai Ganga Nagar, Nanganallur, was arrested by the Adambakkam police for fixing cameras to spy on the activities of the residents.

According to police sources, working women stay in the hostel run by Sanjeev, alias Sampath Raj, 48, from Tiruchi. The residents said that they began to suspect that something was amiss after the frequent spells of renovation that Sanjeev commissioned. Some women suspected that he was getting cameras fixed under the guise of renovation.

Using an app that detects hidden cameras, they found cameras in the switchboard of one of the rooms, the lights and even in clothes hangers in others. The tiny cameras were also fixed on the walls of the bedrooms and bathrooms.

The cameras have now been removed. The police seized 16 cellphones and electronic gadgets from the hostel as well as multiple fake identity cards. “The premises were let out to him two months ago,” the police said.

The police, who arrested Sanjeev, are investigating to find out if the images were uploaded on the internet. They are also looking into whether he was involved in any such crimes earlier. He has been lodged in Puzhal prison.
