“Vote for DPA candidates to ensure continuation of schemes”

April 11, 2011 11:56 pm | Updated 11:56 pm IST - Tirupur:

Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Kanimozhi has called upon voters to exercise their franchise for Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) candidates to ensure the continuation of welfare schemes initiated in the last five years.

“If Jayalalithaa is voted to power, she will discontinue the welfare schemes launched by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi as she did in the past when she stopped free power given to farmers and Uzhavar Sandhais (farmers' markets), among other projects,” she said.

Ms. Kanimozhi was campaigning for Tirupur North candidate C. Govindasamy (DMK) at Vavipalayam here on Monday.

According to her, the achievements of DMK government in the last five years itself spoke volumes on the credibility of Mr. Karunanidhi's assurances in the manifesto.

“He not only fulfilled all pre-poll promises made during the 2006 campaign, but also extended many additional health and social welfare schemes for the poor and needy,” she said. The electors could be sure that all promises in the current election manifesto of the DMK too would be implemented in quick time.

Ridiculing Ms.Jayalalithaa's poll promise of giving goats to households, Ms.Kanimozhi sought to know what one would do with goats when there were other key issues to be addressed.

Mutual respect

She said that DPA was formed with parties that show mutual respect, whereas the alliance the AIADMK forged had very little unity and trust among the allies. Ms. Kanimozhi also campaigned for DPA candidates in other constituencies in the district.
