Expressing ‘satisfaction' at the progress of work in the Hogenekkal Drinking Water Supply and Fluorosis Mitigation Project, Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has said that if the pace [of work] is maintained, the project can be completed well ahead of schedule.
After inaugurating the work for constructing a ground-level reservoir under the fourth phase of the Rs.1,928.80-crore water project to supply protected water to the fluoride-hit Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts in Thinnur village near here on Saturday, the Deputy Chief Minister told reporters that while Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had been reviewing the project with officials at Chennai, he undertook frequent visits to these two districts for evaluating its progress at the field level.
“The project that will supply water to 30 lakh people in three municipalities, 17 town panchayats, 18 panchayat unions and 6,755 habitations in both the districts, is progressing well and we will be able to commission it before its scheduled period for completion,” Mr. Stalin said.

The Japan-funded scheme with the Cauvery as its source is being executed in two segments and six phases.
He said that nearly 14 per cent of work in Phase I and 1.85 per cent under Phase II had been completed. Besides, pipe-laying work under Phase III and IV also was progressing.

“All these works will be completed by 2012.”
Phase V works to be taken up at a cost of Rs.360 crore would be executed during January 2011 and over by 2012.
