Landslip: Train engine derails near Eraniel

The engine of Kanyakumari-Dibrugarh Express (Train No. 15905) derailed immediately after it crossed Eraniel station at 1.10 a.m. on Friday due to landslip, according to a release issued by Thiruvananthapuram Division of Southern Railway. A pair of engine wheels slipped off the tracks due to landslip. However, no one was injured in the accident. Traffic in the single line section between Nagercoil and Thiruvananthapuram Central was affected for over six hours following the incident.

The rail route was restored at 7.30 a.m. on Friday, and Dibrugarh Express was brought back to Nagercoil. It finally left the station around 11 a.m., railway sources said.

Due to the incident, the following changes were made on Friday: Train No. 56310 Nagercoil-Thiruvananthapuram passenger, scheduled to leave Nagercoil at 06.45 hrs, and Train No. 56311 Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil passenger, scheduled to leave Thiruvananthapuram at 07.00 hrs, were cancelled.

Train No. 56304 Nagercoil-Kottayam passenger, scheduled to leave Nagercoil at 12.30 hrs was partially cancelled between Nagercoil junction and Thiruvananthapuram Central.

Train No. 16606 Nagercoil-Mangaluru Ernad Express, scheduled to leave Nagercoil junction at 02.00 hrs, was rescheduled to leave at 07.00hrs.

Train No. 16650 Nagercoil-Mangaluru Parasuram Express, scheduled to leave Nagercoil at 04.20 hrs, was rescheduled to start at 08.00 hrs.

Other trains in Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil section suffered detention till 7.00 hrs. Arrangements were made for full refund of ticket fares in the affected trains, the release added.

Meanwhile, due to limited number of platforms at Nagercoil, Chennai Egmore– Thiruvananthapuram Ananthapuri Express was detained at Aralvoimozhi station for over three hours in the morning, sources said.
