Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M. Karunanidhi on Thursday criticised Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for what he called her inconsistency on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP).
In a statement, he said that after discussing the safety issue with KKNPP engineers and scientists on September 16, 2011, Ms. Jayalalithaa had asked the public not to worry about their safety and sought their co-operation for the implementation of the project. But three days later, she wrote a letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to stop the work.
Mr. Karunanidhi also recalled that those opposing the project met the Chief Minister on September 21 last and thanked her for the steps taken against the implementation of KKNPP. Following this, the Cabinet on the following day and adopted a resolution calling for suspension of work by the Centre until the fears of the people were allayed. Once again, Ms. Jayalalithaa wrote a letter to Dr. Singh on December 17, 2011 reiterating her demand that the people’s fears be allayed.

Later, on March 31, 2012, Ms. Jayalalithaa wrote to Dr. Singh urging him to allot the entire quota of 2,000 MW of energy produced at KKNPP to Tamil Nadu, and she has reiterated this demand once again.
This has surprised and confused the Prime Minister and the protestors of the project as well, Mr. Karunanidhi said.
