DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Monday refuted Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s allegations that private operators were allowed to open schools during his regime, saying schools were started under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan in the DMK rule.
In a statement here, he said what was being implemented currently in Tamil Nadu was Rashtriya Adarsh Vidyalaya, a different scheme, under which private parties could start schools. “I am opposing the launch of model schools under public-private mode because it would pave way for privatisation of education,” he said.
Reacting to Chief Minister’s another allegation that the DMK Cabinet cleared the proposal to allow private operators to launch the schools, he said according to the Cabinet note “these schools will be established with stipulations on pupil-teacher ratio, Information and Communication Technology usage, holistic educational environment, appropriate curriculum with infrastructure facilities of a standard as in Kendriya Vidyalaya.”

Mr. Karunanidhi said that the Planning Commission was also informed that the model schools in Tamil Nadu would follow the State syllabus and curriculum and they would be affiliated to the State Board of Examinations.
