Karunanidhi accuses State of duplicity on Kudankulam

“Ensure safety measures before commissioning of plants”

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday accused the State government of duplicity on the Kudankulam Nuclear Project.

Invoking the age-old Tamil proverb, “ Paammbukku vaalum, Meenukku thalaiyum ,” Mr. Karunanidhi insinuated that on the one hand, the State government was supporting the cause of the local people who were against the project, and on the other, toeing the line of the Centre.

Asked about the DMK's stand on the issue, he said both the State and the Centre should ensure all possible safety measures before going ahead with commissioning of the plants. He alleged the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had suddenly raised the issue of notifying the final order of the Cauvery Water Tribunal in the gazette with a view to finding an excuse to further delay the disproportionate wealth case against her.

Mr. Karunanidhi agreed with the view that Ms Jayalalithaa was finding ways to dispense with her appearance in the special court in Bangalore on October 20. To a question whether the DMK would join hands with other political parties to highlight the alleged irregularities in the local body elections, Mr. Karunanidhi said that the party had already submitted evidence to prove its allegations to the State Election Commissioner.

“Above all, we are moving the court for a remedy.”

Mr. Karunanidhi said that one could not expect any justice from the State government or from the State Election Commissioner.
