DMK MP Kanimozhi was on Tuesday granted exemption from personal appearance for two days by the special court hearing the 2G spectrum scam case. The court allowed Ms. Kanimozhi’s application to that effect as she sought to visit Tamil Nadu to participate in an agitation launched by her party against the ruling AIADMK government.

‘Trial will not be hampered’

Special CBI Judge O.P. Saini said: “Considering the fact that the process of trial shall not be hampered in the absence of accused [Kanimozhi] for these two days and her counsel shall remain present during the proceedings, I am inclined to allow the application. Accordingly, Kanimozhi is exempted from personal appearance in the court for July 4 and 5.”

Contention rejected

The CBI raised fears that there was a possibility of her being arrested during the political agitation, which might affect proceedings in the case, but the court rejected this contention.
