Justice Darmar Murugesan, a judge of the Madras High Court, was on Wednesday sworn in as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. He succeeds the acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri, who has been elevated as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Chief Secretary to Delhi government P.K. Tripathi read out the warrant of appointment of Justice Murugesan and Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna administered the oath of office to him at a function held at Raj Niwas here which was attended among others by the Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and companion judges of the Delhi High Court.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office V. Narayanaswamy, Chairman of the Press Council Justice Markandey Katju, former Delhi High Court Chief Justice A.P. Shah, Bar Council of India Chairman Mannan Kumar Mishra, BCI Member S. Prabakaran, Additional Solicitors General Mohan Parasaran, P. Wilson (for Madras High Court) over 100 advocates from Chennai and other places attended the brief ceremony. Justice Murugesan (61) had served as Special Government Pleader in the Madras High Court during 1994-96 and Special Government Pleader from October 1997 and Government Pleader on December 8, 1998.

He was appointed as Judge of the Madras High Court on March 2, 2000, and as Permanent Judge on June 13, 2001. He will have a brief tenure of nine months as Chief Justice.
