M. Sadananda Swamy, a former judge of the High Court of Karnataka and former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, passed away here on Tuesday. He was 98.
Mr. Swamy was a member of a Division Bench which had quashed the detention of leader of various political parties, including BJP leaders A.B. Vajpayee and L.K. Advani, during the Emergency.
As fallout of this verdict, Mr. Swamy was transferred to Gauhati High Court and another judge late D.M. Chandrashekar, who headed the Bench, was transferred to Allahabad High Court.

Mr. Swamy, who was the senior most surviving judge, had studied in St. Joseph’s College, Bengaluru, and enrolled as an advocate in 1941. He was elevated as an additional judge of the then Mysore High Court in 1967 and became a permanent judge in 1969.
He was transferred to Gauhati High Court in June 1976 and retired there as Chief Justice in October 1977.
