With the jackfruit season having commenced in Burliar and surroundings along the Coonoor-Mettupalayam national highway, stray elephants have become a source of concern in places like Vadugan Thottam and Marappalam below Coonoor.

Enquiries made by The Hindu revealed that a small herd comprising three elephants has become a common sight in the area even during the day in these areas.

This has affected the routine of the people, particularly residents of Vadugan Thottam. Since a calf forms part of the elephant herd, the elders and children dwelling in the region are scared to venture out even when there is daylight.

However, the elephants have not displayed any violent traits so far. Meanwhile, forest department sources said that vigil has been stepped up regarding the movement of the animals.

Stating that it has become an annual problem, they said that the fragrance of the jackfruits and some other fruits including pears was luring the animals. The movements of the herd are being monitored.
