International seminar on Tamil held

Release of a volume of research articles on Tamil marked the 13th international seminar brought up by the Department of Tamil, Periyar University, in association with Valar Tamil Aaivu Mandram, Dindigul, at the university campus here on Saturday.

The seminar was organised with the objective to uplift Tamil to international standard.

C. Subramaniam, former Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University, Thanjavur, was the chief guest. He said that as per a recent research output, of the 6,000 languages that exist world over, one language vanishes from the scene for every two months.

He urged the State Government to come forward with an announcement that those children with Tamil names alone will be eligible for the freebies provided by the government, on the line of tax concession provided to movies with Tamil titles. C. Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar University, spoke.

T. Periasamy Professor and Head, Department of the Tamil, Periyar University, S. Muthulakshmi, Principal, College of Gandhian Thought, Madurai and C. Michael Sarojini Bai, Secretary, Valar Tamizh Aaivu Mandram, offered felicitations. More than 200 research papers were presented at the seminar.
