The number of road accidents within the city limits, its rural areas, has increased in December 2014, when compared to the previous month.
The number of people who lost life on city roads has gone up from 11 in November to 28 in December.
The number of persons injured in these accidents has gone up from 63 in November to 71 in December.

In rural areas, the number of accidental deaths has gone up from 32 in November to 41 in December.
The number of injured, however, has gone down from 137 to 133 during the same period.
Of the 28 deaths on city roads, 19 were caused by speeding.

Five pedestrians too lost their lives. Of the 41 deaths on rural areas, 13 pedestrians lost their lives. Seven deaths were caused by speeding, six because of head-on-collision, and skidding of vehicles. Senior police officials said that absence of pedestrian crossing, increase in traffic violations, speeding, and failure to follow even basic traffic rules, had resulted in the increase in deaths.
Awareness programmes have failed to educate road-users who do not even comply with basic rules, they added.
