“Implement Street Vendors Act”

A fortnight-long signature campaign urging the state government to implement the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation) Act was inaugurated here on Monday.

The campaign, organised by the Pudukottai district wing of the Street Vendors Employees Association, aimed at protecting the rights of pavement vendors.

Explaining the provisions of the Act, N. Ramachandran, district president of the association, said the state government should allocate adequate funds as part of implementing the Act.

Further, identity card should be issued to street vendors.

A ‘town vending committee’ should be constituted for governing the welfare of the pavement vendors.

About one lakh signatures would be obtained during the fortnight and would be submitted to the Collector on June 16.
