With the awareness of organ donation growing substantially, Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH) will accord the highest priority for establishing super specialty surgical departments in all fields for conducting organ transplantation surgeries, according to Sithy Athiya Munavara, who assumed office as Dean on Monday.

Dr. Sithy, an alumna of the TVMCH (1975), said the hospital, which was catering to the needs of over 2,500 outpatients and 1,200 inpatients every day, had incorporated a range of infrastructure facilities and medical and surgical departments even as it was celebrating its golden jubilee. Since awareness of organ donation had spread incredibly among the public in the recent past, efforts would be made to establish adequate facilities for conducting organ transplantation surgeries at the TVMCH.

“To begin with, steps will be taken immediately for conducting renal transplantation surgeries here by creating the infrastructure needed. Our ultimate objective is to make this hospital the best among the medical college hospitals in southern Tamil Nadu by adding similar departments for transplantation in all fields,” Dr. Sithy noted.

To achieve this aim, efforts would be taken for getting funds from the Central and the State governments and increase by 300 per cent the number of seats in all postgraduate and super specialty courses. A proposal had been forwarded to the Medical Council of India through the State government for increasing MBBS seats from 150 to 250 for which adequate infrastructure was already available.

The trauma care department would be expanded with adequate facilities. Steps for commissioning an exclusive drinking water scheme for the TVMCH, ensuring cleanliness on the hospital premises and creating ‘Amma Unavagam’ on the premises would be taken.

The Dean said she would contact every doctor graduated from the institution in a bid to raise funds for constructing more buildings and creating more facilities.
