A. Muthu Kumaran, a teacher at Government Higher Secondary School, Panruti, has been recognised as a Messenger of Peace STAR, an initiative of the World Scout Committee.

He is among 22 other scouts masters from the country to have received this recognition. He was given the certificate by B.I. Nagarale, National Commissioner of the Bharat Scouts and Guides, in the presence of Jose Rizal C. Pangilinan, Regional Director Asia-Pacific, World Organisation of the Scout Movement, at a programme organised recently in Kolkata.

Mr. Kumaran has been recognised for the training he imparts to the scouts students in his school, and the service activities they have undertaken.

At present, there are 64 boy scouts in the school (in the 10-17 age group) , Mr. Kumaran said.

Though he officially joined the scouts programme in 2001, he had already developed an interest in it after reading extensively about it and being involved with setting up a cubs scouts programme at the school he worked earlier.

An adventure enthusiast, Mr. Kumaran has participated in the Himalaya Wood Badge Course for scout masters.

“I enjoy trekking, mountaineering and hiking. The scouts programme provides plenty of opportunities to be involved in such activities,” he said.
