HC stays Jangid’s elevation for a week

Officer foisted false cases: petitioner

The Madras High Court on Monday ordered status quo on the elevation of S.R. Jangid, Additional DGP, Economic Offences Wing, as DGP.

Mr Jangid’s name was recently included in the panel of three officers eligible to be promoted as DGP.

Justice S.M. Subramaniam passed the order on a petition filed by V. Vidhya of T. Nagar, Chennai, who claimed that false cases were filed against her at the behest of Mr. Jangid, in a matter relating to a land deal.

The petitioner said the promotion of Mr. Jangid as DGP was “a mockery of justice against all cannons of jurisprudence, and illegal”. She, therefore, sought an interim stay on his promotion.

Time sought

When the petition came up for hearing, the Government Pleader sought a week’s time to produce the files regarding the issue following which the judge ordered status quo on Mr. Jangid’s promotion and posted the matter to August 7.

The court directed the Government Pleader “to inform the respondents regarding the order of status quo granted by this court today itself through telephone.”
