HC directs cyber law division to block Savukku website

March 01, 2014 12:09 pm | Updated May 19, 2016 05:38 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court has directed the Group Coordinator (Joint Secretary), Cyber Law Division in the Union Department of Information Technology, to block the entire website (www.savukku.net) with immediate effect upon receipt of the court order.

Justice C.T. Selvam passed the interim order on a writ petition by a woman advocate.

The petitioner had raised an issue as to the prevention of abuse and misuse of information technology for defaming an individual. Most demeaning articles tarnishing one’s reputation accompanied the same.

The Judge said the material placed by the petitioner absolutely made it clear that the persons behind the offending material placed on the net had done her immeasurable harm. Also placed before the court were the posts in the website informing various transgressions into privacy, tarnishing of reputation and damage caused to several persons. The Judge noted that the reputation and status of not less than half-a-dozen Judges, several advocates and IAS and IPS officers “stands attacked and damaged at the hands of this vituperative site.”

All this had been done without so much as having the courage to inform who was behind the offending website.

Website service providers and all other persons providing internet service necessarily would require persons in charge of the websites to inform true particulars regarding their names and addresses.

In this case, the names and addresses stood wrongly informed.
