HC adjourns case against coop election

MADURAI

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday adjourned the case pertaining to election to cooperative societies in the State.

A division bench of Justices C.T. Selvam and A.M. Basheer Ahamed, hearing the petitions filed against the election, adjourned the case by two weeks.

The Supreme Court had earlier vacated the status quo ordered on the election by the High Court. The apex court had said the election could be completed but the results should not be declared until further orders.

Tamil Nadu State Cooperatives Election Commission had announced a four-phase election. Following alleged irregularities in the first two phases and petitions filed against the election, the High Court Bench in Madurai had directed status quo on the third and the fourth phases of election.

Several petitions were filed before the Madurai Bench against the ongoing poll following allegations that ruling party members were being favoured. The petitioners complained that though they were eligible to contest, their nominations were rejected. They alleged that in most of the societies ruling party members were declared winners unopposed.
