Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday announced a revision in the coverage under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS) to ₹5 lakh per annum with effect from December 1.
The announcement is expected to benefit about 1.58 crore families across the State.
Under the state’s CMCHIS, a total of 1.58 families have medical coverage of up to ₹1 lakh per annum. This cover can go up to ₹2 lakh for certain critical conditions, and in the case of eight specialised surgeries, including liver transplant, the insurance amount can be as high as ₹30 lakh.

Ayushman Bharat
With the announcement of Centre’s Ayushman Bharat Yojana (ABY), which sought to cover a certain section of the population for a sum of ₹5 lakh per annum, the State was given an option to continue with its existing scheme, in association with the ABY.
ABY would undertakes to cover a population of 77 lakh families. In order to ensure parity for the rest of the 80 plus lakh families already benefiting under the state’s insurance scheme, the government has decided to increase the cover to ₹5 lakh.

For the 77 lakh families under Ayushman Bharat Yojana, the Centre will pay 60% of the premium.
