Goods worth lakhs of rupees gutted in fire in Tuticorin

A fire broke out in the shipping container freight station near Tuticorin, destroying goods worth lakhs of rupees, officials said on Saturday.

Goods including perfumes imported from Singapore were gutted in the fire on Friday.

There were a series of blasts as the deodorant containers exploded. However, no one was injured as it was early in the morning, officials said.

The goods landed at V.O. Chidambaranar port in Tuticorin and were shifted to the container yard last month. They were awaiting clearance from customs officials who were expected to inspect it on Friday.

Officials said fire-fighters took more than three hours to put out the fire. The worth of goods would come to several lakhs of rupees, they said.

The cause of fire is being investigated.
