Good response to trekking expedition

More than 600 youngsters, including 200 girls, participated in a trekking expedition to the hill station of Yercaud on Sunday.

The expedition was organised by the Sky Walk Fitness Centre to motivate the youngster in adventure sports.

Deputy Commissioner of Police S. Selvaraj flagged off the expedition from near the 60-feet bridge in the presence of P. Prakash of the Sky Walk.

The youths trekked via Guntur and other tribal villages before reaching the Lady’s Seat in Yercaud hills covering a distance of about ten km.

The participants collected plastic wastes and other garbage en route and later handed over the same to the Corporation. They also created awareness among the people of four tribal villages on the need for protecting the surrounding environment.

The villagers were also informed about the serious consequences of global warming.

K. Karthikesh, an expert in cancer research and Sasikumar, ophthalmologist, along with Mr. Prakash addressed the participants and the villagers on the importance of increasing the forest cover, protecting the health of the tribal people, total eradication of polythene and plastic bags and protecting the soil fertility. This is the sixth consecutive year the Sky Walk is organising the trekking expedition to Yercaud.
