Good response to Kalam memorial marathon in Salem

A large number of students and youth participated in the Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Memorial Marathon – 2015 held in the city on Sunday.

The event was brought up jointly by the Challenger Sports Trust and National Agricultural Awareness Movemement (NAAM). The marathon was held under three categories – between seven and 14 years (five km); between 14 and 19 years (10 km); and 19 years and above (10 km).

While boys and girls competed separately in the first two categories, the third category was common for both.

Prizes

V. Ponraj, scientist and scientific advisor to Kalam, flagged off the marathon from Mahatma Gandhi Stadium. Mr. Ponraj, along with T. S. Prabhuraja, president of the National Agricultural Awareness Movement, and C. Nachimuthu Raja, president of the Lions Club of Golden Jubilee, gave away prizes to the winners of different categories.

The highlight of the marathon was the participation of many housewives, and special prizes were given to all of them. Participation certificates were distributed to all the participants.

The event was marked by distribution of 1,000 saplings of various species to the public.
