Reminiscent of #GoBackModi campaign during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's April visit, BJP president Amit Shah was greeted with #GoBackAmitShah tweets.

Even as he landed here on Monday, Mr. Shah’s critics trended the hashtag in the region. By 7 p.m. there were 1,29,000 tweets.

DMK MLA T.R.B. Raja tweeted the hashtag. “Cha missed out on all the fun with #GobackAmitShah due to #TNAssembly Heard it was quite a show.” said a part of his tweet.

Congress leader Jothimani Sennimalai tweeted, “Tamil Nadu is a land of self respect, unity, courage and progressive. We will not let you to divide people with your poisonous divisive propaganda. We will not let you to take us back to stone age with your fundamentalist views.”

Anti-corruption activist Savukku Shankar tweeted, “No one supports you in TN except half a dozen sanghis. So please #GobackAmitShah and don’t come back.”

Mr. Shah seemed to have taken note of the protests against him. “Since this morning, some people are opposing this workers’ meeting of the BJP. I want to quote the great Thiruvalluvar to them. Thiruvalluvar had talked about our great tradition of treating guests with respect: “One who is hospitable to his guests, and when they leave, awaits his next guest, will be a welcome-guest in the heavens,” he said.
