Gang hacks two to death

May 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - RAMANATHAPURAM:

A seven-member gang hacked to death two persons at Thennavanur near here on Saturday.

The victims, identified as I. Nehru Pandiyan (29) from Muthupatti in Madurai and his friend P. Jayapal (35) from Vilathur in Paramakudi, were on their way to Paramakudi after visiting Pandiyan’s uncle in the district jail here. The duo was on their way to the magistrate court in Paramakudi on a two-wheeler. The gang members followed the two in a car and intercepted them at Thennavanur near Chathirakudi. After the car hit the two-wheeler from behind, the victims fell down and took to their heels sensing trouble.

The Madurai-based gang members, armed with swords, chased and hacked them, police said. They first hacked Jayapal on his head and after realising that he was not the ‘target,’ chased Pandiyan and hacked him indiscriminately. Pandiyan dropped dead on the spot, while Jayapal succumbed to head injuries at the Government Hospital here. Pandiyan’s uncle Pillayar Ganesan was recently arrested in connection with a murder case at Avaniapuram in Madurai. Police lodged him at the district jail here as they suspected trouble if he was lodged in a Madurai. The deceased visited him to secure his release on bail. The jail authorities directed them to visit the magistrate court in Paramakudi.
