: The importance of protecting coastal zones, natural resources prevalent in the coastal areas and hazards due to its exploitation were driven home to government officials at a one-day training camp on Integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme here on Wednesday.
Local body representatives were present at the programme organised by the Department of Environment.
Inaugurating the programme, Collector S. Ganesh said the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Programme had been conceived by the State government with World Bank funding to protect natural resources in the coastal areas.

The salient features of the programme, disaster management, management of industrial effluents and household wastes were explained to the participants.
The director of Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute J.K. Patterson Edward and District Forest Officer Thangaraj spoke, a press release here said.
