The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has taken up works to reconstruct a portion of the moat wall of the Vellore Fort.
Parts of the moat wall surrounding the fort had collapsed due to aging. Work to reconstruct the third portion of the fallen wall on the western side of the fort is under way, official sources said.
“The reconstruction of the outer wall is an ongoing work. It is being carried out in a phased manner. The old stones that had collapsed are collected and used for the reconstruction. Now, the work is going on a 46-metre-long stretch on the western side,” a source said. A foundation is laid using concrete and a retaining wall to support the moat wall is constructed on the rear side. The average height of the moat wall is five metres, he said.

Simultaneously, fencing work has been taken up for the nursery garden located on the south east corner of the Fort Maidan. He said the garden that is home to several trees has an old damaged fencing. “It is completely worn-out. We are giving it grill fencing and also providing a wider entrance gate for the garden,” he said. Work to clear the debris accumulated at the Fort Maidan is also being taken up.
