The Supreme Court has announced that it will pronounce its verdict in the Cauvery water sharing dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka within four weeks, and the State is expecting a favourable ruling, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said here on Saturday.
He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating a pillar at the Mettur Dam Park, commemorating the notification of the final order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in the Union Government Gazette. It was constructed at a cost of ₹1 crore.
“Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa waged legal battles to protect the interests of the farmers of Tamil Nadu with regard to the Cauvery water dispute,” he said.

Jayalalithaa herself stated that securing the final order from the Tribunal and getting it notified in the Gazette were the most satisfying and memorable achievements of her entire political career, he pointed out, adding that the commemoration pillar would serve as a permanent testimony to her achievements.
When mediapersons drew his attention to the refusal of the Karnataka government to comply with the Tribunal’s order, Mr. Palaniswami said Tamil Nadu was expecting a favourable verdict from the Supreme Court.
Responding to a query, the CM said the State government would come up with new proposals for the farming community in its budget.

Speaking at another event earlier, Mr. Palaniswami said the State was planning to construct check dams across all the rivers to conserve water.
